Guide to Art Collecting

Starting an art collection is an easy way to surround yourself with things you love. Read below for our suggestions and an easy breakdown on how to begin your own collection.

Why Collect?

Collecting artwork not only supports the creative economy, but is an opportunity to own a piece of art history. While some collect artwork as a financial investment, most individuals collect art out of love and to support an artist they admire. Collectors often form close relationships with the artists they collect work from, and in turn gain invaluable insight into the life and work of the artist they are collecting. It’s an opportunity to own a one-of-a-kind work rather than a commercial print of an artwork that thousands of people also have hanging in their homes. In other words, it’s a surefire way to impress dinner guests with a unique artwork and to share your aesthetic, cultural, and creative interests through collecting.

Steps made easy

  1. Look, look, look! Go to gallery openings, art fairs, benefits, auction houses, and open studio events. Make it a fun and go with a friend! Schedule individual visits to artist studios, browse for artists on gallery websites, or even scroll through instagram.

  2. Follow your gut. If you see an artwork that you can’t stop thinking about, then consider buying it before someone else does! Inquire with the gallery or the artist about the price and payment options. Many artists and galleries are willing to work with a collector needing a payment plan, and many galleries partner with Art Money to make buying and collecting artwork more accessible.

  3. If an unique artwork is out of your price range and a payment plan isn’t available, then consider purchasing a signed prints of the artists work or an artist book if they have one.
